“I’m going to start a travel blog,” says the high school math teacher- turned swim school manager- to her salesman partner. And as they say, the rest was history.
Nope. The reality is that my thirst for adventure was years in the making; it can be traced back to my mom giving me my first film camera at age 12; it was previously hers, a gift from my dad. It was with this camera that I learned how to develop film and my own prints in a studio. I was ready to capture every new memory made.
I’ve always had a need for travel that I couldn’t deny, and Social media has changed the game for today’s generation. We now have the ability to adventure to places we honestly would never have known about otherwise. But, when I was a teenager, that wasn’t the case. I would buy books about distant countries and spend hours looking through the photographs and descriptions of places that I only dreamed of one day seeing in real life. Yes, to this day, I still have my copy of Times Magazine’s, “The World’s 100 Most Important Places” on my bar cart. It certainly shows it’s wear and tare from the many hours I’ve spent flipping through the pages. And thanks to my dad, I had my first opportunity to make those pages leap to life and leave the US; this trip was life altering. Instead of quenching that thirst for adventure, that trip to Italy and Greece fueled the fire that was burning inside of me.
I had to photograph every place I visited, like a madwoman, and keep my experiences written out in a journal that adventured with me. Since receiving that first film camera, photography has always been a love of mine and will always be a way to preserve my most favorite memories. It gives me the ability to look back, even years later, on a photograph and remember myself in that exact moment. Because we change so much throughout our lives, it feels incredibly special to have these very real moments to share with future loved ones.
So, fast forward 15 years, four more cameras, give or take 10 countries, a partner with a love for travel that mirrors mine, fun technology, and a passion for documenting our travels, and here we are. Super easy, super quick. Right?
Nope! Life is filled with its pits and peaks, but what I know is that I can look at my photos and think about how incredibly lucky I am. I found a partner that fits into my life so perfectly. Never once has he tried to douse my sense of wonder and really has become my greatest adventure partner. I could suggest a new place to travel to, a new hike to conquer, and his answer is always yes. Seriously, god bless this man and his spontaneous nature. It was after meeting him, that we really developed a love for the outdoors: we started camping, hiking, kayaking, and planning trips that all revolved around nature.
So where I once was keeping to myself in the confines of my journals, we needed something we could do together. I highly recommend starting a photo journal for two! We captured our adventures with a photo and a simple caption of nothing more than the place and date. This has been successful for us, but after surprising Brad with a GoPro for his birthday one year, and a drone the next year, we’ve slowly morphed documenting our adventures through a photo journal into making mini videos.
So, while Brad, my salesman partner, has encouraged me to start this blog for quite some time now, I finally feel ready. This blog is going to be our way of sharing the adventures we’ve taken, and adventures we plan to take, with you. We are not experts, really at anything. But I think that that’s the beauty in sharing our experiences with you. We are not professional photographers, videographers, or travel bloggers. Nor are we very wealthy that we can travel anywhere at anytime. And yet, here we are, two very normal people, making the most of the lives we’ve been given with minimal resources at our fingertips.
My advice to all readers: Never let an opportunity to travel pass you by, because why shouldn’t you be able to experience all that this world has to offer?
Yours,
Bohemian Postcards
