This blog is being created while on one of the longest road trips we’ve taken: a 12 hour drive to Lake Tahoe. Will we survive? Currently on hour 4 somewhere near the Hoover Dam just before 9am. Brad is listening to his third podcast. The first two were super interesting but my mind is onto the next thing. So, from a person who cannot just simply “sit” in a car for 12 hours, here are 5 tips to survive a long road trip:
- Multiple forms of media
Books. Podcasts. Audiobooks. Magazines. Download a movie on your laptop. Don’t just rely on one form of media to keep your mind occupied.
2. A clear backseat
Do everything in your power to pack all of your belongings in the trunk, leaving your backseat clear. Bring a pillow and a couple of blankets so that as you rotate drivers, the passenger has a comfy place to sleep. This is a game changer, I promise.
3. Plenty of Water
I am a coffee fiend. A fiend, y’all. But, it is so important to drink a ton of water instead of sugary/caffeinated drinks when on a long road trip. It’ll keep you hydrated, keep your energy levels high and increase brain function (all positives on a long drive, right?!).
4. A cooler with a variety of healthy snacks
The keyword here is “healthy.” It’s so much easier to pull off whenever you’re hungry at whatever fast-food restaurant you see. So, this tip to survive a long road trip does take some prepping. Now, I know fast-food doesn’t effect everyone else as negatively as it effects me, but it is literally just a fact that you feel better when you eat better. If you have a variety of healthy snacks at your finger tips, you’ll be more inclined to pass that McDonald’s, pass that Wendy’s, and feel great.
5. Leave EARLY…like before the sun rises
This can be something that just like to do but it, without fail, makes our road trips easier. We like to get up before the sun rises to start our drive. Time seems to fly when you drive in the dark vs. driving during the day.
Bonus tips from Brad: “Bring snacks for your wife that SHE likes, always say yes to your wife, and figure out whatever you need to do to make your wife happy.”
Happy traveling,
Gabrielle
