What a weird time to be alive, huh? If you are reading this in the distant future, I’m talking about the dreadful COVID-19 that has plagued (for lack of better word) the entire world. At this very moment, all 50 states in the US now have confirmed cases and millions across the world have been put under lockdown. Phrases like “social distancing” and “flatten the curve” are becoming more and more normal to hear. So, “what the **** do we do” you might ask? I’m here to help! Read on to learn about 8 trips to daydream about while stuck at home. Side note: these may or may not be taken directly from my bucket list. You’re welcome.
New Orleans
One word, people: beignets. Beignets are a French pastry made from deep-fried choux pastry. That’s right, fried dough. Located in the French Quarter, Cafe du Monde is the most popular coffee shop to find beignets at in all of New Orleans. This shop is open 24 hours a day so if you see a giant line down the street, which you will 9 times out of 10, don’t fret. Other serious highlights of traveling to New Orleans are the rich culture and delicious food.
New York
I might be biased here. Definitely not though. And if you’ve ever visited New York, you know I’m right. Since you can probably already list the top 5 touristy things to do in New York City, I’m going to share some of my favorite things to do: see a Broadway show, find a Halal Guy’s food truck and eat until you can’t eat anymore, visit Central Park, go to a south shore beach (Robert Moses is my favorite), eat as much Italian food as possible, eat as many bagels as possible, and eat as many egg sandwiches as possible. I guess all-in-all, eat a ton of carbs. New York is great for carbs. Foodies, I promise you’ll love it here!
San Diego, California
San Diego is certainly one of my favorite weekend getaways. Luckily, living in Arizona, San Diego is only about a 5 hour drive. My favorite thing about San Diego is the vast differences in types of trips you can have. For example, love the city life? The Gas Lamp District will put you in the heart of the downtown area with countless bars and restaurants within walking distance. Love small, quaint beach towns? Ocean Beach is for you (check out Sunset Cliffs). Love to party? Pacific Beach will be right up your ally. Fancy, big spender? La Jolla will knock your socks off with its rugged coastline and giant beach houses (check out cave kayaking while in La Jolla).
Italy
Italy means two things to me: food and architecture. It is no surprise that I love food, so Italy will always be one of my most favorite places in the entire world. Very different from the versions of “Italian food” we are used to in the states, pizza and pasta are otherworldly in Italy. Also, some of the most beautiful architecture in the world can be found in Italy. Your time in Italy will be best spent wandering around the towns, eating the most delicious meals you will ever have in your life, and stopping once, twice, perhaps three times for gelato. Top Bucket list items for me: visit the Coliseum, take a touristy photo in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain.
England
England had been on my list for a long time. Growing up, my mom used to tell me about when she visited England as a little girl and loved it. So, before I even knew anything about England, I knew I had to go.
First, let’s start with London. London is a bustling city that is home to monumental sights such as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace (maybe you’ll get lucky and see the Changing of the Guards). My favorite thing in London: Abbey Road. Walk across Abbey Road recreating the iconic 1969 Beatles album.
My second favorite thing to see in England is Stonehenge. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument consisting of a ring of giant standing stones weighing close to 50,000 lbs! Some say that Stonehenge is the most mysterious and mystical place in the entire world for its origins are not known for sure.
Spain
Spain is full of people just truly enjoying every aspect of their lives. Take a cooking class, sunbathe on the beach on the coast, go to one of the many street markets and shop until you drop. My two favorite things I experienced in Spain: eating the most amazing Paella I’ve ever tasted and visiting the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The Sagrada Familia is a Roman Catholic minor basilica that was first built in 1882 and is still unfinished to this day.
Greece
Two words: island hopping. The best part of traveling to Greece was how easy it is to travel island to island. You can book a tour or you can simply take their public transportation ferry. Santorini is, hands down, the most romantic place in the world. Find a restaurant with an unobstructed view, order a glass of wine, and watch the sunset. Mykonos is a haven for its lively nightlife. Crete is best known for its traditional villages, beaches, and culture.
France
France is another incredible country to visit for its architecture and museums. Bucket list items include: have a picnic under the Eiffel Tower, wander around the palace of Versailles, see the Moulin Rouge in Paris, visit the Louvre to see their breathtaking collection of art and sculptures.
Yours,
Bohemian Postcards
